In December 2015, a small group of homeschool families decided to meet up at the library to play chess. From that first meetup, a monthly social chess club was born. By the end of the school year, the group was in need of a larger space and better organization. The following school year a student board and year-end party and chess tournament were added, but we didn't stop there! We continued to grow, and grow, and grow!
In 2017, a couple of the chess club kids competed in a scholastic tournament, which led them to ask their chess club friends to join them and form a team. By the end of the school year, we had our first team and our first team trophies! During the 2018-2019 school year, the team met weekly for practices and grew from two to over twenty. In April 2019, six chess team members attended the National Junior High Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament and brought home an impressive six trophies. At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, the social club had over 90 members with more than 40 attending practices and competing with the team.
It all started with chess, but as we began witnessing the benefits of chess education and competition, we realized that it didn't have to stop there. In the spring of 2019, SPHERE Homeschool, Inc. was created to house not only chess but also additional high-quality academic enrichment opportunities. Chess is the cornerstone of our program, but we also include leadership opportunities through our student board and student team leadership positions, and we have launched a middle school speech club this school year. We are planning to add new opportunities in the future. Some possible future additions may include debate, STEM, robotics, entrepreneurship, and number sense. The founders of SPHERE believe access to academic extras is an important part of a child’s education. SPHERE’s mission is to help make well-rounded students by providing academic extras to homeschooled children in Lubbock and the South Plains.

SPHERE offers multiple leadership opportunities to middle school and high school students. The student chess board plans and performs many of the tasks necessary to run the casual chess club. Experienced chess team members are asked to lead by teaching teammates of all ages and mentoring and encouraging younger teammates. Even experienced elementary students are given opportunities to teach and lead.
Our chess club gives new and casual players an opportunity to learn and practice chess basics in a lively and supportive atmosphere. Our chess teams meet more frequently to learn and practice new skills. Both groups emphasize respect, good sportsmanship, team effort, and fun!
Our middle school speech club gives students an opportunity to learn and practice public speaking skills in a small, supportive group setting. Communication skills will give our kids a an advantage in whatever they choose to do in life.
